Pencil Shavings for Texture in Mixed Media Painting

What's the most surprising item you have added to a painting for added texture?

There are many ways to add texture to a mixed media piece. There is molding paste, tissue paper, crackle paste, dried plants, gesso, fabrics, tape, string, and more. But, what about items that you might not ever think about?

One day I was working on a tree woman figure painting and I was adding all kinds of yummy texture with gesso, molding paste and crackle paste. I was in the flow and I sharpened my pencil and didn’t want to get up to throw out my pencil shavings. It popped into my head to just add the pencil shavings to my piece! How liberating is that? Not only did I have less waste, I had some interesting texture that I would not have been able to create in another way.

In this video, I show how I used the pencil shavings as additional texture. And scroll down to see the finished painting.
